100 Coherent Switch and Open Line System: 2 Complementary Open Network Solutions

Today, we’ve launched our new 100G Coherent Open Networking Switch, expanding our portfolio of solutions for high-bandwidth, long-haul applications. While it may seem to overlap extensively with our PAM4-based Active DWDM Open Line System, these can actually be two complementary solutions to different network challenges. This article will explain how to get the most out of each high-performance solution.

As shown in the chart above, the Open Line System is ideal for use cases in which fiber is scarce. For example, it can serve as a massive upgrade to a 10G passive DWDM system, allowing you to add 10x the bandwidth over the same fiber. Its relatively low cost and zero touch provisioning mean it is similarly cost-effective and easy to deploy as a lower-speed passive system.

On the other hand, the 100G Coherent Switch is ideal for uses cases in which link spans are much longer than 100km. Open networking makes it more flexible, scalable, and cost-effective than comparable proprietary solutions, and its integration of L2/L3 switching and coherent transponder can save valuable rack space and simplify operations.

These two solutions can also be used together to solve both challenges. The Ethernet ports on the QSFP28 ports can aggregate into the Open Line System to solve a fiber scarcity challenge in one direction, and the coherent ports can connect to a ROADM to extend into the core network.
