XGS-PON: A Crucial Step Forward in FTTx

What Is XGS-PON?

XGS-PON is the symmetrical 10G upstream/10G downstream PON standard developed by ITU. It is considered a simplified, more cost-effective version of NG-PON2, in which wavelengths are fixed and mobility has been removed.

XGS-PON uses wavelengths outside of the spectrum allocated to other PON technologies; as a result, GPON, XGS-PON, NG-PON2, and others will be able to co-exist on the same fiber. It enables the operators to deploy lower-cost 10G XGS-PON services first and capture immediate 10 Gb/s business opportunities before launching WDM-PON.

Because of this spectrum allocation, NG-PON2 or WDM-PON can be introduced later without a forklift upgrade to the network or disrupting any existing GPON or XGS-PON services.

The solution uses the same PON OLT platform and same line card chassis, as shown in the diagram below. Different optics can be plugged in to serve different optical network units (ONU) for GPON, XGS-PON, and, eventually, NG-PON2 or WDM-PON. This makes the network evolution simple, flexible, and efficient and reduces both CAPEX and OPEX.
