How to Overcome Fiber Shortages on Your College or University Campus

One of the most common optical networking challenges colleges and universities face is fiber constraints. Whether it’s a need to reduce massive leased fiber bills, turn up new links between new locations, or expand the capacity between two locations, it can be difficult to keep up with bandwidth requirements to meet educational, residential, and research demands. However, we have two tried-and-true solutions that can help you overcome these challenges.

Single fiber (bi-directional) optical transceivers offer full-duplex 1G or 10G transmission over a single strand of fiber, effectively doubling your available bandwidth over distances up to 80km (10G) or 120km (1G). Since these transceivers use the same standards-based form factors as traditional dual fiber transceivers (e.g., SFP/SFP+, XFP, and more) they can be deployed in all the same switches. This makes switching to these transceivers the most painless way to instantly ease fiber constraints.

WDM passives are an excellent way to add up to 40 new links across your network, with a minimal associated cost and physical footprint. These reliable passive devices use coarse or dense wave division multiplexing (CWDM or DWDM, respectively) and can be packaged in many different form factors and channel configurations, depending on your particular network needs. For example, one Midwest university successfully expanded their bandwidth using DWDM passives and amplifiers from Champion ONE.
